Our art gallery excursion

On the 25th of February we went on an excursion to the Gallery of modern art. We got there by a train. We went to the GOMA art gallery first and there were lots of Andy Warhol art. We saw portraits of famous people that Andy Warhol painted. We did lots of fun things there, but we had two activities that we really liked. One of them was called fifteen seconds of fame. You got to sit on a chair in front of the camera and you got to do something for fifteen seconds. Then you got to look at what you did in that fifteen seconds. After we did fifteen seconds in fame we went in a photo booth to have a photo taken of ourselves in Andy Warhol style. Next we got to go to this area where there were silver pillows that you were able to push up into the air. We only got 5 minutes to play in there because so many other people wanted a go. This area was called the Silver Factory. After we did everything in GOMA we had a break outside and then we went to the Queensland Art Gallery and saw lots of paintings and sculptures. There were also silver balls floating in very cold water and we got to push them around but they were very light so we could not kick them. We had lots of fun in both of the art galleries and we hope to come back again soon.

Valentine's Day

14th February is Valentines Day, a day for people to express their feelings of love to each other. This is done by sending cards and gifts.
Did you know that the origin of Valentine's Day, or Saint Valentine's Day, comes from the life and death of a Christian martyr? According to author Martha Zimmerman, the date traditionally celebrated as St. Valentine's Day finds it origin in the Roman festival of romance called Lupercalia, when the gods Juno and Pan were honored. It was a fertility festival or a lover's holiday looking forward to the return of Spring. In the fifth century, in an attempt to abolish the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius changed Lupercalia and its February 15 date to February 14 and called it Saint Valentine's Day. Even though the names and the date were changed, the emphasis continued to be on love.
Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

We Say Sorry

This morning at our school assembly we had a special prayer to say sorry to the Aboriginal community. This morning at 9.00am, our Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd made a speech to say sorry to The Stolen Generation, for taking the children away from their families over 70 years ago.

The Stolen Generation are a large group of Aboriginal people that were taken from their families when they were young by the Australian Government. The government thought they were helping the children by giving them to other families to educate and look after them.

We said sorry because we felt their sadness when they were taken from their families.

Chinese Year Of The Rat

2008 - THE YEAR OF THE RAT

The "Rat" is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac.
Legend has it that the Jade Emperor invited the animals for a party. The first 12 to arrive was the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and lastly, the Pig. All the animals were named after the 12-year cycle that governs Chinese life thereafter.
Various versions of the Rat's story are particularly revealing about his character.
One version has it that, towards the end of the journey, the animals had to cross a celestial river, and the Rat asked the Ox to ferry him across. When they arrived on the other side, the Rat jumped down off the Ox's head and that's how gained first spot in the order of the Chinese zodiac.
Those born in the "Year of the Rat" are clever, ambitious, creative, hard-working, fastidious, charming and sociable, but can be a bit stingy when it comes to sharing their wealth or possessions.
Rats are compatible with Dragons, Monkeys and Oxen, but should avoid Horses at all costs.
In the "Year of the Rat", we can expect 12 months of plentiful opportunities and prospects not to mention being relatively free of turbulence, (which is great to know especially if you're planning on making some long-term investments, starting new projects, or keeping the home fires burning brightly).
It's also a rather fine time to socialise and grab a sumptuous meal or two with friends and family!

Mermaids

Mermaid was a mythical creature that lived in the sea. According to popular belief, mermaids were half human and half fish. They attracted mortal men by their beauty and their singing. They would sit and comb their golden hair. A magic cap lay beside them. They would slip the cap on the head of the man they wanted and take him away with them. A human being could live in the sea by wearing the magic cap. There were also mermen who captured mortal maidens.

Mermen and mermaids are often found in art and poetry. Certain sea animals such as the seal, dolphin and especially the manatee or sea cow, look a little like human beings from a distance. This similarity in appearance may explain the stories.

What We're Reading

This term we are reading a book called The Indian In The Cupboard, by Lynne Reid Banks. We have only just started reading it and so far it's been great. The book is about a boy called Omri who got a plastic indian for his birthday. He also got a cupboard so he decided to put the indain in the cupboard and locked it with his great grandmother's key. He went to bed and the next morning he heard strange noises coming from the cupboard.....
